TMJ disorder (TMD) can cause persistent pain. In severe cases, the discomfort can be enough to disrupt activities and take you away from important parts of your daily routine. Certainly, you should visit a qualified professional to receive treatment that can address the root cause of your condition and provide lasting freedom from your symptoms. But what can you do in the meantime? There are some home remedies that can provide fast albeit temporary TMD pain relief.

Dietary Changes

You can reduce stress on your jaw joints by making some simple changes to your eating habits:

  • Choose foods that require minimal chewing. Soft foods, such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, smoothies, and mashed potatoes, are very easy to consume and should not stress your TMJs (your jaw joints).
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods, including nuts, raw vegetables, gum, and tough meats, since these can aggravate your symptoms.
  • Cut food into small pieces so that you can chew gently and avoid wide jaw movements.
  • Maintain proper hydration by drinking plenty of water, which helps your muscles function properly and reduces the risk of muscle cramps or spasms around your jaw.

Heat and Cold Therapy

Application of heat or cold can bring quick relief from TMJ pain. Use a warm compress, such as a heated towel or a microwaveable heat pack, and apply it to the side of your face near the jaw joint. The warmth can relax your muscles and reduce stiffness. You may also use an ice pack or a cold compress wrapped in a thin towel. Apply it to the affected area to reduce inflammation and numb pain.

Alternate between heat and cold if you find that both methods provide you with relief, but always avoid applying either for more than 15 – 20 minutes at a time to prevent skin irritation.

Over-the-Counter Pain Medications

Some over-the-counter pain medications are effective in reducing TMD discomfort. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can decrease inflammation and ease pain in your jaw. Acetaminophen can also help if you prefer an alternative to NSAIDs.

Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging and consult your healthcare provider if you have questions about safe use, especially if you take other medications or have underlying health conditions.

Proper Posture and Sleep Habits

Proper posture can reduce unnecessary strain on your jaw. Keep your head aligned with your spine, especially while sitting at a desk or using electronic devices. Use a supportive pillow while sleeping, and avoid sleeping on your stomach, which can twist your neck and jaw. In contrast, sleeping on your back or side with proper support for your head and neck can help to maintain a neutral jaw position.

Home remedies are not a substitute for professional care, but they can provide temporary symptom relief! Try them today to see if they work for you.
